Point Defiance Marina in Tacoma –A Great Place to Take Your Kids Fishing

If you are looking for things to do in Tacoma with your children then take them fishing. I have been promising my kids we would go Point Defiance Marina Dockfishing for years and I was finally able to take them right before the summer ended; we had a great time.  I wanted to take my kids fishing where I knew they had a chance at catching something.  I wanted it to be convenient and safe (don’t we all want this).  I eventually stumbled upon a place in the Point Defiance Park which was the Point Defiance Marina.

The Point Defiance Marina

Store

The Marina has a very large store full of fishing supplies, fishing rods and of course bait.  I had purchased a salt water and fresh water fishing license before coming to the Marina.  If you didn’t already have a fishing license you can purchase one there.   They were kind enough to process fishing licenses for both my kids (kids are free).

If you don’t have a fishing pole they have them available for rent.  They also rent out small motor boats if you want to fish further out in the Pudget Sound.

Dock

Right next to the marina store is the designated fishing area.  There are benches to sit on and holes in the rails where you can place your fishing poles.  There is a large sink with running water and a pretty decent area for plenty of people to fish.

Point Defiance MarinaOur Experience

We arrived at The Point Defiance Marina around 8:30 a.m. and got the kids their licenses.  We fished for about 3 ½ hours and didn’t catch a thing. I was a bit rusty and didn’t have things set up properly for fishing success.  The kids got to reel in their lines several times to recast and to feel like they were doing something.

We brought our lunch and snacks to keep our tummies full while we waited for any fish to bite.

Just because we weren’t catching something doesn’t mean those around us weren’t.  The other  people fishing on the dock were catching fish periodically that my kids would go and peek at.  Then they would either throw them back or put them in their cooler for later.  One guy caught a small shark which the kids thought was pretty cool.

Cost

I hadn’t been fishing for 20 years so before even heading to the marina the family and I went to Wal-Mart in Tacoma and purchased some basic gear.  Below is approximately what I paid to get started.

2 Fishing Poles – $45.00

Fishing Weights and Hooks – $ 5.00 –$ 10.00Shark

Tackle Box $10.00

Misc. Fishing Gear $10.00

My Fishing License – Approximately $60.00 for the year

When it was all said and done, we basically got started for less than $140 or so.  That isn’t a bad start when you figure that I will only need to purchase bait the next time we go fishing.

Overall Experience

My kids and I had a great time on our first fishing experience together. They got a taste of what fishing was all about and we had some good family time.  There is a great view from the fishing dock and there is a ferry crossing the sound ever thirty minutes or so.

I highly recommend this location for fishing.  Whether it be alone or with the family, I believe you will find this to be a good spot for fishing.

I will share more fishing location in the future and my family and I find them.  Enjoy The Point Defiance Marina!
