The Stonegate Pizza and Rum Bar is a relatively new bar on South Tacoma Way in Tacoma. Established in 2009 by Jeff Call, Stonegate is one of the few restaurant bars that draws a crowd to the bar scene on South Tacoma Way. At the moment Stonegate and Dawson’s are the only bars with live music and what I consider safe picks for a good time.
My wife and I were fortunate to have a date night on a Friday night. We started the night at a Chinese restaurant then made our way to Dawson’s for a few drinks and darts. I had been wanting to check out Stonegate and this was night to do it.
We got there around 11 p.m. and a pretty decent band was playing old rock and roll music. It was hip and I knew most of the songs. There was a modest group of people listening to the music.
The bar is decorated nicely, clean and hip. There is metal art work behind the bar that that adds a certain edge yet class to the establishment.
There were only two ladies working behind the bar and appeared to be the only staff working on that night. The staff seemed to keep everyone happy as drinks and food appeared to be served very quickly.
The drinks we ordered tasted great and the staff were very friendly to my wife and I during our time there.
We didn’t partake of any food during our trip to Stonegate but I wish I had. The Stonegate menu is quite impressive with the variety of options on their menu. The Stonegate menu offers a large list of appetizers, soups and salads, gourmet burgers, entrees, paninis and sandwiches, gourmet pizzas, gourmet calzones and even desserts.
And on the burger part of the menu they have the “Stonegate Challenge”. Apparently they sell a 7 pound burger for $40. It’s safe to say I will not be participating in that challenge but maybe you are up to it.
Most mainstream restaurants don’t have a menu the size that Stonegate is offering and I applaud them for it.
Stonegate appears to have a variety of acts that come to their restaurant. Most appear to be bands but I think I saw a magician on their event calendar which is very different from most bars in the area. As I was looking at their website I was quite surprised to see that.
There are two very large projection screens in the bar area that are easily viewable from anywhere in the room.
In the second downstairs room there is a pool table and a few video games. The pool table is a little ragged but the wife and I still had a good time playing pool on it. Also if you happen to be at Stonegate while a band is playing, the second room is a little quieter if you want to have a conversation with someone.
Their website says they can hold 119 people. There isn’t 119 chairs downstairs but there is plenty of seating for a large crowd. There is an upstairs level (that I didn’t see) that can be used for private parties.
Impressive…That is the first thing that came to my mind when I saw Stonegate’s bathrooms. Usually bar bathrooms are brutal. The Stonegate bathrooms were far from brutal with tile floors and nice hand washing areas. Bravo Stonegate.
To be honest I didn’t know what to think about Stonegate before my wife and I spent some time in there. They are one of the new bars on the block and I have always been partial to another bar. I will say I was pleasantly surprised about everything at the Stonegate Pizza and Rum Bar. The only thing I have left to review is their food which I plan on doing sometime soon.
Stonegate has a really good atmosphere and I would give them a shot when looking for a decent place for dinner and a beer (or Rum in their case).
